Intensive Course In Obstetric Emergencies (iCOE)
The Intensive Course in Obstetric Emergencies (iCOE) is a two day course designed for practising obstetricians, junior and senior, in both public and private centers. It focuses on the real and potential Obstetric emergencies facing us that often result in serious risks to both mother and baby. It is an evidence-based course that consists of 14 short lectures with abundant sessions involving hands-on practise at procedures and skills.
The teaching modules consist of skills stations, workshop discussions and scenarios. Topics covered include:
- Shoulder dystocia
- Massive haemorrhage
- The difficult caesarean section
The course incorporates current concerns regarding rising litigation and how to minimise medicolegal issues with good clinical governance and risk management. Participants are also given a scenario in one of the modules, to practise how to break bad news, a key communication skill in obstetric emergencies.
By limiting the participants to 24 per course, we ensure that all get to have adequate exposure to practising on mannequins and rehearsing the skills being taught. Each course is run by 8 experienced trainers who have all had prior extensive involvement in the RCOG-based Life Saving Skills Course (LSSC) on Obstetric Emergencies.
Obstetric emergencies are uncommon but when they occur, the cascade of events can lead to rapid deterioration and hence all obstetricians need to be skilled, updated and prepared in order to save lives as well as to reduce litigation and medical errors.
Participants will receive a certificate and upon completion of the course and 20 CME points. iCOE will soon be a credentialing requirement for obstetricians in most hospitals
